They hold it by the blade

The Constitution is not the enemy. The people who hold it by the blade are. They did not repeal Article I. They learned which clauses make a sword and which make a duty, and they only pick up the sword.

• Speech or Debate (Art. I §6) is waved at a camera as if the Constitution blessed the cable rant. It blesses the floor. Hutchinson v. Proxmire already said the press release is not the chamber. • The First Amendment is a fence they stand behind when they light the country on fire with a verb that stops just short of Brandenburg — and a statute they would write for you if you used the same heat. The amendment is not a weapon. The double standard is.

• Appropriations ‘made by law’ (Art. I §9) is the letter they hide the unread omnibus behind. The clause requires a law. It does not require them to read it. They turned a limit on the Treasury into a door for a thousand pages at 2 a.m.
• The oath (Art. VI, 5 U.S.C. § 3331) is theater unless someone asks whether they faithfully discharged the duties. They have not passed twelve bills on time since FY1997. They still recite the words.
• They divided a nation with selected clauses. Neighbor against neighbor. Jersey against jersey. Arendt's point stands: they need you unable to tell the charter from the clip. The villain is not the Constitution. The villain is the hand on the blade.

A republic uses the document as a limit on the shop. A syndicate uses it as a costume. Pull it back together by reading the rest of the article — the duty, not just the shield. The file is the hilt. They do not get to keep only the edge.
